New lower GST rates kicked in from Monday, resulting in a slashing of prices of as many as 375 items ranging from toothpaste and shampoo to cars and television sets, a move seen as an attempt to boost consumption to cushion an economy facing tariff headwinds. The Supreme Court of India has formed a National Task Force (NTF) to address the growing concern of student suicides in higher educational institutions. The court took note of the recurring cases and directed Delhi Police to register FIRs on the complaints of families of two students who died by suicide at IIT Delhi in 2023. The NTF, chaired by former apex court judge Justice S Ravindra Bhat, will prepare a comprehensive report, including the identification of causes leading to suicides, analysis of existing regulations, and recommendations for strengthening protections. The NTF will also have the authority to conduct surprise inspections of higher educational institutions and make further recommendations to ensure a holistic approach to addressing mental health concerns and eliminating suicides.

In yet another attack on an Indian student in Australia, a 31-year old cookery student was stabbed in the stomach by two men after he finished work in a South Yarra bar in Melbourne earlier in November.The student, who did not want to be named, underwent an emergency surgery and needed 26 stitches on his punctured bowel after the attack on November 5, according to a media report. The Victoria police are now appealing for witnesses to the attack to come forward.
